Hair Cut

I finally bit the bullet and decided to go short again with my hair. I got it cut today and it's literally like lifting a weight off of my shoulders. I have a ton of hair - it's so thick that every single stylist comments on how much hair I have. So getting 6 inches cut off of it feels like a major relief. I always have such grandiose ideas about growing my hair long long long like the girls in the magazines. Today when I told my stylist that, she said "oh Megan, that's not how they wear their hair everyday - those are extensions for the photo shoots." Ah. Now I understand how they wear their hair so long - they don't have to lug it around all day every day of their life. Hair weighs a lot. Anyways, I thought I would share a photo with you since I did that silly "hair poll" a while back. Here's what I've ended up with for now and I am loving it. It's basically my natural color(ish) (actually a tad darker than my natural color, but not by a lot) and I'm on the fence about leaving it this color vs going lighter or darker. Any suggestions on color?

I have come to the realization that I am tiny bit of a yarn/fiber hoarder and have so many skeins and hanks of yarn just dying to be made into something lovely. Hairstyle VOTE

Ok, it's time for a vote. I could really use some help deciding what to do with my hair. It's currently long and dark and my bangs are growing out so it's similar to style 2. I can't decide if I should leave it long and dark the way it is or if I should cut it off... Please leave a comment and cast your vote. That would really help me out!!

Art vs Craft

I've wanted to be an artist since I was a child. I always pictured myself sitting outside of a coffee shop in Boston or Paris or somewhere beautifully inspiring while I drank coffee and ate warm scones and I painted on canvases. I dreamed of selling my work in galleries for thousands of dollars and proving to myself and others that it was possible to pay the bills and build a career as an artist. At 29 years of age, my life looks nothing like that dream.

I graduated with a college degree in elementary education because I was "good with children" and had a short-lived and miserable career as a teacher. While I enjoy kids, teaching was never the right fit for me. Yet it was (somewhat) secure, paid (some of) the bills, and was looked upon (by most) as a respectable, responsible, mature career. Walking away from that path saved my creative life but I'm sure it earned me many critics and bumped me down a few notches on people's 'maturity scale.'

I've considered myself an artist for a few years now. When I'm filling out profiles or paperwork, I write "artist" where it reads "occupation." Yet when people ask me about my art, two things happen. 1) I look for a way to try to convince them that sewing purses and selling them on Etsy is really art and 2) they appear disappointed that I didn't just tell them about selling oil paintings in galleries in the art district. And then when they find out that I chose to walk away from a teaching career for this? I must be out of my mind.

You see, when you say the term 'artist' there's a certain level of expectation about what medium you use and what type of fancy education qualifies you to be respected in that medium. But what if there's no fancy education? What if my form of work looks more like something being sold at craft fairs instead of art galleries? Am I a fraud for calling myself an artist?

I've always struggled with art vs craft. I've always, always hated it when I'm referred to as "crafty." I cringe at the term. When I think 'craft' I think of glue and glitter and popsicle sticks - nothing like the work that I do. I was once invited to sell my work at an "artisan market" and when I arrived to set up, there were handwritten cardboard signs being posted all over the neighborhood advertising the "craft fair." I was devastated. Embarrassed.

The debate between art vs craft is a very personal one for me. One seems to earn respect and prestige while the other earns judgement and stigma. My life looks nothing like my childhood dreams of being an artist. Few people would regard me as successful. Few people even take me seriously and even fewer support me.

Truth be told, I'm not entirely sure how to make a career out of being an artist. I don't personally know any artists whose wisdom I can glean from. But I do know that I adhere to this definition of art: "the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power." This is the type of work that I do. And I wear that definition like a loved garment each day, clinging to it whether or not anyone else understands it - because it's who I am. And I also know that I am working on getting over my own personal stigma about craft: "an activity involving skill in making things by hand" because I do make things by hand and I value things that are handmade. And I am waking up each day, greeting my creative self, and doing the work that inspires me - regardless of the title others use to describe it. And trying like crazy to build a tribe of people around me who understand.

Head Scarf

My goal for this fall is to try this classic look of tying a head scarf. I found this great tutorial which I will be following the minute I find myself a gorgeous vintage scarf like that (SO beautiful!). My hair is growing and growing, and I'm hoping to have it long enough this fall/winter to be able to put it up like that with a gorgeous scarf. I'm also considering going darker with my color for fall. We'll see! What do you think of the head scarf look? Fab or no? Tell me what you think!

I found this really cute (free!) knitting pattern on The Lion Brand Yarn website today. It is definitely my next knitting project for Julian. My favorite brand of yarn to knit with is Blue Sky Alpaca - 100% Organic Worsted Cotton is my preference. I'm considering doing a fish to match Julian's blanket that I made before he was born. But then again, there are SO many yummy colors to choose from that I might just do something totally different. I can tell that the summer season is coming to an end; I always get the itch to start up knitting again once Fall is in sight. Fall weather is by far my favorite and I intend to soak in every glorious minute of it before the trees are bare and the air is cold. I'm looking forward to apple cider and pumpkin lattes. Mmm... Fall. Bring on the knitting!

Julian Reese Brothers was born on June 23rd at 6:36pm via c-section. At birth he was 7lbs 140z, 20.5inches long. He will be 2 weeks old tomorrow and is doing great! He's an awesome sleeper and eater and has such a beautiful, mild personality. We're both doing great - I'm working on resting and recovering from my surgery and he's working on growing. We are enjoying a little time as a family. Feeling so grateful for my little summer baby!

June is special for me this year as it will be the month that my baby arrives. I am so looking forward to the new life and the change that it is bringing to me. I'm patiently (mostly patiently) waiting and thinking of all of the things this baby will teach me and the bits of daily light that he or she will bring to my days ahead. I wonder about the things I can teach him/her and how I will get to participate in shaping the future that lies ahead for him/her. Can you believe how adorable this camera bag is?! Well, my amazing husband bought it for me and gave it to me as an (early) Birthday present. I am so in love with it and keep packing and unpacking my cameras and accessories inside of it. It's really well made and inspires me to continue honing my sewing skills. It has me feeling really geeky about cameras and accessories so I thought I would put together a blog post of camera gear I love and a few items I'm dreaming of still. I'm becoming such a camera geek!

Camera Items I Own and Love:

My DSLR. I'm a Nikon Girl. I absolutely love my Nikon and while it's an amateur camera, it has far more to it than I can imagine needing. And for a DSLR, it's quite reasonably priced. I own this: Nikon D3000 along with a couple of lenses.

Lensbaby: Composer. This ball in socket type lens creates a sweet spot in focus with a creative blur around it depending on how the lens is angled. A very creative lens that creates fun and exciting photos.

Diana F+ camera lenses with Nikon DSLR mounts. It's a fun way to get to play with the toy camera fun without having to commit to the camera and film. It's definitely not as amazing as the real thing, but a nice way to get to explore without the film commitment. I currently have the 38mm Superwide lens, the 55mm Wide Angle lens, and the close up attachment for the 55mm:

Authenticity and Art

This topic has been on my mind a lot lately.

One way I define myself is as an artist. In general, this word encompasses such a huge plethora of things, that it nearly seems elementary (i.e. during the school day we go to art, PE, or music class). Yet the word also seems like my life jacket, my lifeline. A word that saved my life when I was on the verge of losing myself entirely. It's strange to feel so connected to a word or concept such as "artist" yet feel like I hardly brush the tip of it's ice burg, so to speak.

Webster defines an artist as:
artist |ˈärtist|
noun
a person who produces paintings or drawings as a profession or hobby.
• a person who practices any of the various creative arts, such as a sculptor, novelist, poet, or filmmaker.
• a person skilled at a particular task or occupation : a surgeon who is an artist with the scalpel.
• a performer, such as a singer, actor, or dancer.
• informal [with adj. ] a habitual practitioner of a specified reprehensible activity : a con artist | rip-off artists.
ORIGIN early 16th cent. (denoting a master of the liberal arts): from French artiste, from Italian artista, from arte art, from Latin ars, art-.

To me, this is a very 19th or 20th century definition. In fact, I'd venture to say that this definition seems quite trite. Boxed. Drawing, painting, sculpting, singing, acting, dancing... arts yes. But not all artists fit neatly into their parameters. And it's my suspicion that the lack of "fitting inside those boudaries" is exactly what pulls me in and draws me near to it's side. I love the idea of not fitting quaintly into it's box.

Yet with that comes the all-present flip side. When you don't fit neatly into the box of "painter" or "dancer" or "writer," then where do you fit? I think Jen Lee hit this concept spot on in her video in my previous post when she says "people who are creating content are often faced with the decision or the responsibility to create a container for their content as well." She speaks to the need to spend time creating points at which we slow down and spend time trying things on to experiment and interact with things inside our daily lives. It's interesting, right? The idea that we now need to create a container in which our work can fit because the old containers no longer do it justice. And the idea that we can try things on and experiment or explore. I know many Fine Arts majors who never felt within their degree programs the flexibility to try on a new skill like a new article of clothing. It was paced, defined, and narrow in it's scope.

So what? Well, for me this idea, the realization of what an artist is or is not, has created a very big question. In a world where everyone's art and creativity is readily available through internet, social media and networking, and ever present in person, how do I stay authentic to myself and create something not just to sell, but that has meaning. Depth. Originality. And encompasses me at this point in my life. It is a question that part of me thinks has a tangible answer. But the other part screams 'you may never answer this question.' But the bottom line is that the defining of authenticity isn't really the solution. It's the process of working through the question. The exploration. The path, not the destination. Which is quite ideological for someone with a personality like mine. And maybe that's why I'm wrestling with it so deeply. I don't know.

So in the mean time, I'm working through Jen Lee's Multimedia Course on Finding Your Voice and will probably revisit Julia Cameron's The Artists Way while I sort through these questions and seek out their possibilities. Because for me, being an artist is not just a way to pass time or give me something to do because I'm 'crafty', but it's an energy that runs through my veins. It's what keeps me going. It's soul work. And it's not easy. But for now, I am doing the work. And walking towards a more authentic version of myself. Which requires quite a lot of bravery.

Just a stone on my current path. And quite possibly the most honest blog post I've shared in a long time.

This is my sister and me at Squam Art Workshops last June (2010). While I won't be able to attend Squam this year, I am holding it very close to my heart. Trying to explain what happens at Squam Art Workshops is nearly impossible since so much of what happens there happens in the heart. How do you describe being moved so deeply that your very being is changed? At SAW, I found kindred spirits, creative skills I didn't know I had, a respect for innovation mixed with humility and humanity. I truly believe that Squam Lake is a place where magic exists and hope radiates from the waters. Falling asleep to the rain on the water and waking to the Loons on the lake, cozying in with new friends in a log cabin, walking along dirt paths to learn from knowledgeable and genuine people are among the treasures I will never forget. A once and a lifetime trip of flying in to NYC, roadtripping with my sister across the east coast to NH to spend a week on a famous lake, meeting a childhood musical legend and hanging out with her, doing yoga in the most beautiful barn I've ever seen, and being changed so deeply: possibly the best trip of my life. Missing my Squam friends so deeply and dreaming of returning next year (when I'm not home awaiting the arrival of a baby!). Squam is where dreams are made and dreams are realized. Wishing that upon every soul I know. It's truly magic.

We got to see the baby today on an ultrasound. Here is a great profile of the baby. I'm 24 weeks pregnant this week and baby looks great. All is well. Time is flying by and I can't believe how fast this pregnancy is going. I'm so grateful that I've been healthy and feeling well. Moving right along!

How much do I love this dreamy camera bag? So much that I'm dedicating an entire blog post to it! Jo Totes has the lovliest vintage-inspired bags designed for carrying camera(s) and lenses as well as purse items on the go. I love that it does not look like a typical camera case and that it's designed to protect the delicate pieces of a camera that need extra care. I have a Nikon D300 and a couple of lenses as well as a collection of items like a Lensbaby and Diana lenses with an adaptor for my DSLR from the Lomo shop. I'm excited to share with you that plans are in the works for my spring line! Many of you know that I take the month of January off from managing my online shop and to give myself a little break. February is starting off with a bang and ideas are being dreamed up for this spring's line. There is a little bit of clerical work being done this week and next but I am hoping to take my shop off of vacation mode early next week so keep a look out for that coming back online. Here is a little project I've been working on while my shop has been on vacation. I am knitting a baby blanket and here's a photo of my progress so far. Working on a few personal projects and hoping to have my shop available again sometime in February. While my hands are busy knitting, I am dreaming up all the new adventures that we will take together this year with the Meg Brothers collection. Letting the energy fester while the ideas marinate and bubble to the surface. Good things are coming. XO

Hello! Hope you had a lovely New Year if you are in a country that celebrated the turning of a new year. It feels good to be back in this space with you. I'm not really one for New Year's Resolutions. I don't really know why. But I guess they tend to feel too boxed-in to me. Instead I prefer to think and dream about what the year will bring or what I hope for it instead of one blanket "this year I will..." statement. So here is a list of things I am hopeful for this year or that I've decided I would like to try.

1. wear lipstick sometimes
2. knit more
3. take more photos
4. try new foods
5. love more deeply
6. learn to be a mom
7. make new friends
8. write handwritten letters

Closing Up Shop and Blog

I'll be closing up my etsy shop tonight and won't be reopening it until sometime after the new year. I don't have an official date that it's coming back up, but I'll be working on a few goodies to fill it with before my Spring Line comes out. I will also be taking a little break from blogging through the end of the year. I may pop in a time or two with a photo or a little line, but I won't be doing any official blogging until January. Between 3 Christmas celebrations with our families, my husband's grandmother's 90th Birthday party, our 3 year anniversary, and New Year's, I think the next two weeks will be filled with some much needed family time. Hard to believe December is coming to a near end, but there are many things to enjoy in this year still and so much to look forward to for next year. A Successful Weekend

Just stopping in today to say a huge thank you to all who came out to the Fancy Tiger's Holiday Handmade Craft Show last weekend. It was such an amazing turn out and I really enjoyed meeting so many of you. The show was a huge success. I apologize for another Friday without a Fashion Friday post. I do however have a little news to share instead.

We are going to have a baby! I know it is no consolation for the lack of fashion advice on this Friday, but it does explain why I keep forgetting what day of the week it is and why I have been sleeping more than sewing or blogging. Apologies for the bit of absence here in this space. I'm due in June and could not be more excited. Integrate Retreat Update

You may remember this post from back in June where I shared the great news that Jen Lee is bringing her retreat goodness to the Rocky Mountains! She is doing a retreat November 11-14 in a lovely vacation home on Lake Dillon and you still have time to be a part of it.

Fall colors happen early in the fall season, and they don't last long around here. Special effort has to be made in order to see autumn's beautiful touch particularly in the mountains. The frost and snow will come soon enough to blanket this state in white. So we enjoy the color when we can. Fall is my favorite season (it's much more commonly known as 'fall' than 'autumn' around these parts-why is that?) We had the chance to spend this past weekend in Dillon with some friends and spent time outside enjoying the turning Aspen trees. We have had such a hectic end to our summer with numerous trips out of town and up into the mountains, but we were so grateful to have spent this weekend among what I feel is Colorado's prettiest time of year. Fall colors have me wanting to knit more, visit the apple orchard for fresh cider, and do some baking. Soaking it in over here. How about you? What sort of feeling/emotion does fall weather evoke in you?

Wow, I have been out of town more in the past few weeks than ever and it feels good to be home. I've been to 4 different mountain get-aways in the past two weeks which has been fun, but tiring. So glad to be on a normal schedule again! Meanwhile, I am itching to get back to work on my fall line, secret presents for loved ones, blogging, and creating. I've had to be really intentional about blocking out specific time to get these things done. Life seems to want to blow right over my time for the things I truly enjoy - does this happen to you too? My art time disappears if I'm not careful to keep it nestled in my very short opportunities for it. I'm preparing to ground back down and get my finger tips back in the fibers that soothe me to my very soul. It's time. The changing of the seasons - whether it be on the calendar or by internal body clock - prompts me to shift and create. How about you? What are you working on these days? Red Lipstick

Ok, if you're like me, today's tip is a bit of a stretch. For someone like me who never wears more than Burt's Bees chap stick on my lips, this pushes even me out of my comfort zone. But I'm here to say that this look is hot. And even these ladies photographed are pulling it off with regular outfits. No fancy outing necessary. Why red lipstick you ask? Well, for me it's about adventure and confidence. There is no way to wear red lipstick without feeling empowered, gorgeous, and bold. And I think as women we all need to give ourselves reason to practice these things. So I'm asking you to try something brave, bold, scary perhaps? Even if you do nothing other than put it on and walk around your neighborhood, kitchen, or bathroom. Try it. I know that summer is in full swing and I am loving it, but I wanted to share with you all that I ordered fabrics today for the 2010 Fall Line and I am jumping-up-and-down excited about them! I cannot wait for them to arrive so I can see them and feel them and imagine all of the lovely things they will become. I tend to lean towards Joel Dewberry home decor fabrics for my line, but this fall I will be adding many Anna Maria Horner fabrics to the mix as well and I am so excited to share them with you. At this point I am thinking that the line will be launching in early September but as it gets closer I will be able to have a more exact date. It's so fun to get new stuff and create new possibilities and I look forward to unraveling many here with you over the next weeks!

Design-It-Yourself Clothes

One of the gems of Squam Art Workshops for me this year was being able to take classes on patternmaking from Hodge Podge Farm's Cal Patch. I took three classes learning how to make patterns for a basic skirt, a tshirt, and how to stylize patterns and make them my own. Cal's calm teaching style and her step by step instruction made the classes both extremely accessible as well as enjoyable. When I arrived home, I had three new patterns and so many ideas to get started. While at Squam, I purchased Cal's book, Design-It-Yourself Clothes. This book has been such a great companion to the skills that I learned in the classes and has been a great tool for some of the challenging details of pattern making. One of the things I love most about this book is how she takes you from making one pattern to turning it into various versions just by tweaking certain measurements or options. I love that I can make minor adjustments and have many different pieces in my new wardrobe. The instructions in the book are nicely complimented with photos which are nice for someone who learns visually as I do. This book is the perfect starting place for learning the basic skills necessary to make clothing with a "just right" fit for your body. I love that I can hear Cal's comforting voice while reading through this book and I am so happy with the results from these patterns. My highest recommendations for this winning book. Belts!

Now, don't get me wrong - I am not under the impression that this is a new trend. This belt thing has been going around for quite a while now, but I shy away from this trend for some reason so consider this post some personal encouragement. The best thing about this trend (in my opinion) is that anything goes: wide, narrow, leather, scarves, you name it. If it's a belt, it's in! *And how much do I LOVE that polka dot dress?! (If you know where to find it PLEASE pass it along to me!) So, the thing I am going to try this week is wearing a belt over my clothes and I'd love for you to try something new with me! If you already do this, how could you switch it up? Add a scarf as a belt instead of a leather belt? Try a wide one or a narrow one? I'd love to hear how you are trying it this week too! Gingham is everywhere this summer! Gingham has been around since the 60's but has made a rather loud appearance this year in fashion. Often times fashion designers use gingham similarly to how they use muslin - they use it as the basis for a piece or the rough draft, if you will. However, this year gingham has made it to the big show and is definitely not a rough draft but is the main attraction. A loose hair bun

I really love this look and wish I had long hair so that I could do this with my hair all summer. The thing that makes it so great for summer is the way that it is loosely tossed up in a high bun on top of your head. It is no fuss and leave plenty of time for everything else. I especially like the first photo where she has it tied up with a ribbon. While I don't have enough hair for a bun like this, it's my goal to practice no-fuss hair this summer. How about you? I am excited to announce some thrilling news! Meg Brothers designs can now be found in the world's cutest boutique, Wholly Tara! I met Tara and Lindsay at the art show I participated in at Squam Art Workshops and I was honored to be asked to partner with them to showcase my handmade items in their shop. Their shop is a gorgeous combination of clothing, jewelry, art, and gifts. I could not be more thrilled and if you are anywhere near the area or go to visit, make sure you stop by. Banana Bread and Ingenuity

I am not exaggerating when I say that this is the tastiest banana bread I have ever put in my mouth. I know, it sounds like an exaggeration, but I swear to you - it is not. It is so good that I am sharing a photo and the recipe here (on a typically non-food blog) because I think you should try it. I promise, you won't regret it.

This recipe comes from the best selling cookbook: How To Cook Everything by Mark Bittman. I have made this recipe as is, with spelt flour, and this time completely gluten-free. *Note, if you are making it with spelt instead of wheat you can do a 1:1 substitution for flours. If you are doing GF see the note below.*

Banana Bread
Makes 1 loaf

8 Tbsp (1 stick) butter, plus some for greasing the pan
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
3 very ripe bananas, mashed with a fork until smooth
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (could use pecans instead)
1/2 cup grated dried unsweetened coconut (i used sweetened because it was all i could find, so i dropped the sugar content down just a little to about 1/2 cup sugar and it worked out fine)

1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan.
2. Mix together the dry ingredients. Cream the butter and beat in the eggs and bananas. Stir this mixture into the dry ingredients; do not mix more than necessary. Gently stir in the vanilla, nuts, and coconut.
3. Pour the batter into the loaf pan and bake for 45-60 minutes until nicely browned. A toothpick inserted into the center of the bread will come out fairly clean when it is don, but because of the bananas this bread will remeain moister than most. Do not overcook. Cool on a rack for 15 minutes before removing from the pan. To store, wrap in waxed paper. (For some reason this is the magic step- the wax paper makes it the perfect texture and keeps it from drying out. Totally worth it)

Ok, gluten-free friends. I made this for the first time with a mixture of GF flours and it worked out beautifully. I used a slightly adapted concoction from this fantastic blog post. Here is what her brilliance and ingenuity says:

The Aherns' All-Purpose Gluten-Free Flour Mix
300 grams superfine brown rice flour (10.5 ounces)
250 grams sweet rice flour (8.8 ounces)
150 grams tapioca flour (5 ounces)
100 grams sorghum flour (3.5 ounces)
100 grams potato starch (3.5 ounces)
100 grams cornstarch (3.5 ounces)

(I couldn't find superfine brown rice flour or sweet rice flour, so I substituted white rice flour for both. Oh, and I converted each measurement to ounces since my kitchen scale didn't weigh in grams)

Mix them all up in a large container. Put on the lid. Shake it around. You have flour. If you look at this combination, the brown rice flour and sorghum flour make up 40% of the mix by weight. The sweet rice flour, tapioca flour, potato starch, and cornstarch make up 60% of the mix by weight. Here's the important part: if you keep to this same ratio of whole grain to starches, you can use other flours you like more for your all-purpose mix. Use millet instead of the sorghum, or amaranth. If you can't eat corn, use more potato starch in place of the cornstarch. Stick to this ratio and mix up a big batch of flour. You'll have all-purpose flour again.You can bake almost any one of your old baking favorites now, substituting this mix for the all-purpose flour in the recipe. It's easy.

The only thing you have to remember is this: do not simply measure a cup of the gf all-purpose flour and expect the recipe to work. When you substitute your gluten-free all-purpose flour in a gluten recipe, use 140 grams or 5 ounces for every 1 cup of gluten all-purpose flour. 140 grams or 5 ounces. These measurements are your friends.

**So for this banana bread recipe I substituted 10 ounces of this GFAP flour mix for the white and wheat flours and it worked perfectly. And the flours taste great with no strange texture. You'd never know it was GF, I swear!**

If you try this recipe I'd love to hear what you think. This has become my go-to baked good since everyone who tries it loves it. Happy baking!

The Impossible Project

While traveling last week, I had just long enough in Manhattan to stop in and have the rare opportunity to visit The Impossible Project studio in person. They have store fronts in Vienna, Berlin, New York, Barcelona, and London. The one store front in the US was the one I had the extreme pleasure of visiting and this 5th floor walk-up was true love upon arrival.

In case you are unsure about what The Impossible Project fame is all about, their website tells it all: "A NEW GENERATION OF INSTANT FILM FOR POLAROID CAMERAS. CAREFULLY MANUFACTURED TO SLOWLY DEVELOP IN YOUR HANDS. PROUDLY PRODUCED BY THE IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT AT THE FORMER POLAROID FACTORY IN ENSCHEDE, NL"

I had to resist the urge to buy my body weight in Polaroid film in person. They answered my many questions and sent me on my way with a load of film. And I would say even the harassment I received from the guy at the airport wondering if I was aware that 'digital cameras take much better photos these days' was worth being able to bring this lovely film home with me. Magic indeed.

I made this cute little headband this weekend just for fun. For some reason, the mustache has become a very popular and trendy image and I think it is really cute. Record Club is an informal meeting of various musicians to record an album in a day. The album chosen to be reinterpreted is used as a framework. Nothing is rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track is put up here once a week. The songs are rough renditions, often first takes that document what happened over the course of a day as opposed to a polished rendering. There is no intention to 'add to' the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens.

My gray low-top One Stars are my favorite shoes ever. I wear them frequently. My husband rocks his black ones almost every day. My Birthday

We celebrated my birthday all day long yesterday. It was filled with love, fun, phone calls, good food, and friends. My husband spoiled me with fantastic new gifts and exciting adventures. Here is a recap of the day in photos:

I now have one of these beauties thanks to my husband. And it is gorgeous.
He surprised me with a Magic Mouse from Apple. It goes great with my MacBook and I can't wait to do some photo editing with it!

Dustin took me 2 weeks ago to get this tattoo for my birthday. I wanted to do it early so it would be healed and not sore for my day. And I love it so very much.

We spent the afternoon at The Butterfly Pavilion here in Denver. I'd never been. And we really enjoyed it! (photo by Dustin)

Our friends John and Lindsay went to dinner with us at The Old Spaghetti Factory where we sat in this old railcar for dinner. *Thank god for GF pasta dishes there!*

Then we went to The Shoppe and had GF Vegan Chocolate Peanut Butter cupcakes. I cannot express how much I love this place.

Then we came home and played a mean game of Scrabble while we listened to some throw back music from back in the day.

I received phone calls from some of my family members and was sang to by my niece and nephew. I felt so celebrated and really enjoyed the day with my family and friends. My 28th year is off to a great start. Thanks to all who made this day so special for me.

10 Things I Rarely Tell People (Just for fun!)

Hi Everyone,
Today's Fashion Friday post is being postponed since I've been at the doctor all morning and am trying to get in to another one this afternoon. Instead here is a little post I put together for the weekend that I'm posting early. It's a little 'just for fun' post about things I rarely tell others. Be back here in this space when I'm feeling better! Much love, Meg

1. I have a lot of health issues which translate into making me a very high-maintenance restaurant orderer. Like "When Harry Met Sally" high-maintenance. Maybe worse.

2. Growing up I had a major Nike clothing affinity (this annoyed my family terribly) because I hoped Nike would sponsor me when I joined the WNBA. I haven't played basketball since high school.

3. My favorite things about myself are my feet. I have super cute feet - my mom used to tell me I should be a foot model (*A foot model?!?!*). My family members rarely shoe shop with me because of it.

4. I rarely eat fish. I only enjoy eating (some) fish when it is cooked for me, and it is without skin or parts on it still. (i.e. fins, eyeballs...)

5. I played an entire season of softball (as an adult) before I hit the ball. I struck out every 'at bat' for an entire season. And I played softball as a kid. Apparently my skills did not translate into my adulthood.

6. The only time in the last 10 years that I have sported my natural hair color was around my wedding (2 1/2 years ago) since I was growing it out to donate it. Now it is pink.

7. I am the "black sheep" or rowdy one in my family and I love every minute of it.

8. My teeth were so bad as a kid I nearly had to wear headgear. I had braces in 4th grade and wore a retainer until I graduated high school. And no, my teeth still aren't perfectly straight.

9. I listened exclusively to rap music in high school so I really enjoy KS107.5's "Back In The Day Cafe" hour at lunchtime that plays all the music I still know word for word. I can rap with the best of 'em.

10. I don't eat Oreos anymore because I cannot eat them responsibly. I mean never. They are banned from my house. Pretty sure they are my own version of drug.

Dress Post

I have been busy the past couple of days working on a really inspiring blog post about dresses. You see, I have declared this summer "The Summer of Dresses" and I've been really into finding inspiration to share. However, I'm finding that what the internet is lacking is a real perspective. What I mean is: It has been impossible to do a dress post that does not include a bunch of women that need to (as my brother in-law would say) "eat a cookie." I am not about posting photos and encouraging women to become inspired by unrealistic images or perceptions of unhealthy-looking women. I refuse to compromise a healthy body image to promote inspiration. I dislike that many good fashion photos are infected with images of women's bodies that are not normal, healthy, or in my opinion attractive. So I am not posting what I had set out to post this week. I hope you can understand it's out of love. Should I come across some inspiring designs this weekend that are made for actual women, I will include them here for you. In the mean time, I am asking you to spend today feeling present and content in your body. You are perfect and are exactly what a real woman looks like. Much love. XO

I did it!

Here is my new tattoo! I got it done on Friday night and this photo was taken about an hour after (so pardon the light swelling and redness) but I have to say: I LOVE THEM! I had it done at a really nice tattoo shop after doing some research and knowing a friend who had her work done there as well. The girl who did it was incredible. And since it was my first tattoo she took it easy on me. It was done in about ten short minutes after the drawing was done and the stencil was made. And yes, it hurt. More than I thought it would. But I totally love it and it was worth every minute of pain. So for those who were asking about photos, here you go. What do you think?

Brightly-colored Ballet Flats

I've been on the hunt for the perfect pair of yellow ballet flats and I think I've found the pair I'm going to go for. No, they are not these adorable ones photographed, but these ones. They are ridiculously inexpensive and I think they're great. So I am ordering them. But ballet flats are all over this season, and especially brightly-colored ones. So this week's challenge is to try on a pair in a color you wouldn't normally buy (yellow for me) and either buy them or grab a quick snapshot of them! This Week's Tip To Try:
Flapper Style Headband

This is my new favorite way to wear headbands these days. This one is made of some jersey knit remnants that was tied into a simple knot/bow. It is ridiculously comfortable and since there is no pressure behind my ears like normal headbands, there was no headache with this one. I think stretchy fabric may be best, but I'm sure you could do this with pretty much any type of fabric. It simply wraps around the head and hair instead of coming up from underneath. Cute, simple, and comfortable. Have you tried wearing a headband like this? I'd love to hear about it.
